In the mid-forties to early fifties most of the county magazines in the United Kingdom
were formed.
Hertfordshire Countryside is one of the oldest, and launched by The Letchworth
Printing Company in 1946. It started as a quarterly magazine with a limited circulation
for people with county interests, as a ‘regional Country Life’. In later years it was
published by William Carling in Hitchin and in the early 1980s by Herald Printers in
York. The title was taken over by Beaumonde Publications Ltd. in 1985 and is still
published by the same family business today. In 1989 we were the first publication in
Hertfordshire to ‘go live’ with Desktop Publishing.
For over sixty years the articles in Hertfordshire Countryside, have covered the history,
curiosities, legends, folklore, and many other aspects of the county. This accumulated
wisdom is available to all in most of the county’s Reference Libraries.
